A partnership between RISD and Brown University, the Master of Arts in Design Engineering (MADE) is an intensive program that fosters innovation at the intersection of design and engineering. Students in the program have the option of doing a final project or more theoretical and research-based paper or study. The Master of Design (MDes) program is an accredited, multidisciplinary STEM experience with a curriculum that is rooted in evidence-based design and design research.
Most of our students have undergraduate training in a design-related field and several years of successful professional experience. We occasionally admit students from other disciplines who show exceptional design potential. For these students, we offer a three-year course of study that emphasizes mastery of core design skills while pursuing graduate-level study. The portfolio submitted to the Department along with the application package is the most critical element in the review for admission. Its purpose is to reveal the creative potential, breadth of experience, and discipline sophistication of the applicant. Review of your past work in conjunction with information gleaned from your essay of intent, allows the Faculty admissions committee to discern your aptitude for art and design work and readiness for graduate level.
The School of Design is composed of faculty, students, and staff who chose to relocate to Pittsburgh from around the world to live, work, and learn.
